Second-best scenario. What future will come? The post-human transformations of Ivana Basic, Benni Bosetto, Ambra Castagnetti and Fin Simonetti

What futuristic scenario awaits postmodern man? Considering the current geopolitical context (in which the precipice of the contemporary apocalypse subverts the presumed human certainties, of which decaying societies are full), between the desire to produce ever more intelligent objects and ever more technological subjects, by who will be inhabited the societies of the third millennium?

The rarefied environment welcomes the viewer disorienting him and showing a place altered by the presence of artificial organisms and organs that simulate biological ones, anthropomorphic subjects, bodies that are not completely human, residuals of an apocalyptic scenario placed with surgical precision. The second best scenario exhibition , created at the Milanese Galleria Francesca Minini by Ivana Basic (1986, Belgrade), Benni Bosetto (1987, IT) , Ambra Castagnetti (1993, IT) and Fin Simonetti (1985, Vancouver) , takes its cue from the book Terminus radiant by Antoine Volodine and offers itself to the viewer as a gallery of hybrid species.

“ […] one ends up in an in-between universe, in something where everything exists in a powerful way, where nothing is an illusion, but where, at the same time, one has the disturbing sensation of being trapped inside an image and of moving in an alien dream, inside a Bard in which one is like aliens, very unsympathetic intruders, neither alive nor dead, in a dream with no way out and no time” (p. 86) .

In Radiant Terminus – written in 2016 and published by the 66THAND2ND publishing house – the author imagines a universe in which a few survivors of an atomic pile sunk into the earth nourish this source of energy since they are immune to its radiation. If the characters of the story are a contamination between man and superman (the soldier Kronauer, the ultra-centenarian grandmother Ugdol, the anthropomorphic shaman Soloviei, etc.), the works on display circumscribe an alternative world to the knowledge we have assimilated up to now, showing extra elements -terrain, alien and futuristic. They anticipate and normalize a vision that defines itself in the progressive development of the hypothesis of an anti-human society.

The presence of man in his stereotyped image is concealed by colored glass in the works of Fin Simonetti . The artist recovers a family tradition, the working of glass, integrating materials of American culture (his adopted land despite the Italian-Canadian origins). The concept of man in its gender sense is investigated here through posters that portray men’s hairstyles hidden by worked glass, which at times only allow a glimpse of certain parts. The titles of these works, Cathedral and Chapel, they are a representation of his interest in sacred places as recipients of collective rituals and dynamics. It is interesting to consider how despite the inclination of a certain current which underlies the transhuman movement (according to which man can evolve towards extreme cognitive and physical evolutionary forms, until he reaches possible and hypothetical anti-human forms), the ritual dynamics of new companies remain an important element. American sociologist David Riesman, analyzing American and Western society, in his essay The Lonely Crowd[1], identifies the presence of other-directed individuals as products of the age of consumerism. Removed from their identity as individuals, they are conditioned by the mass and present themselves as examples of serial production. Incapable of preserving their own differences of thought (so much so that they are devoid of critical content), to the point of abdicating their function as “rational animals”, they accept conformity as a post-human condition in order to totally align themselves with the dominant ideology…
